The Process

Professional sanding strips away old finish and surface damage to expose fresh, clean wood ready for stain and sealer. Our experienced crew delivers a smooth, uniform result without drum marks or waves.

Hardwood Floor Sanding Services

Sanding is the most critical step in any refinishing project. It determines how evenly your stain absorbs, how smoothly your finish applies, and how your floors will look for years to come. Alpine Hardwood provides professional hardwood floor sanding throughout the Cokato area and the Twin Cities west metro.

Why Professional Sanding Matters

Hardwood floor sanding requires specialized equipment, technical knowledge, and hands-on experience. Common DIY mistakes include leaving drum marks (visible grooves from the sander), creating waves or dips by dwelling too long in one spot, skipping grits which leaves scratch patterns in the final finish, and failing to sand edges and corners properly.

Our Sanding Equipment

  • Drum sander - the primary machine for open floor areas, using abrasive belts to remove finish and level the surface
  • Edger - a disc sander used along walls and in tight spaces the drum can't reach
  • Detail sander - hand-held orbital or triangular sanders for corners, closets, and around obstacles
  • Buffer/screen - used for final smoothing and between-coat abrasion during the finishing process

Grit Progression

We typically work through 3-4 grit levels:

  • 36-40 grit - coarse cut to remove old finish and level the floor
  • 60 grit - removes coarse sanding marks and begins smoothing
  • 80 grit - further refinement for a smooth, even surface
  • 100-120 grit - final pass for a silky surface ready for stain

Dust Management

While no sanding process is 100% dust-free, our sanders are connected to vacuum systems that capture the majority of airborne particles. For maximum cleanliness, ask about our dustless sanding option, which uses HEPA-filtered extraction to capture 95%+ of dust at the source.
