The Process

Engineered hardwood pairs a real wood veneer with a layered core for superior stability over concrete, in basements, and with radiant heat. We install using glue-down, floating, or nail-down methods.

Engineered Hardwood Floor Installation

Engineered hardwood combines the natural beauty of real wood with a layered construction that handles moisture and temperature changes better than solid hardwood. Alpine Hardwood provides professional engineered hardwood installation for homes and businesses throughout the Cokato area and the Twin Cities west metro.

When to Choose Engineered Over Solid

  • Concrete subfloors - engineered hardwood can be glued directly to concrete, while solid hardwood cannot
  • Below-grade installations - basements and garden-level rooms where moisture levels are higher
  • Radiant heat systems - engineered hardwood handles the temperature fluctuations of in-floor heating without warping
  • Wide plank formats - wider planks in engineered construction are more dimensionally stable than wide solid planks
  • Faster project timelines - prefinished engineered products eliminate the need for on-site sanding and finishing

Installation Methods

Glue-down: The most common method for concrete subfloors. A urethane adhesive bonds each plank directly to the concrete, also acting as a moisture barrier.

Floating: Click-lock engineered planks snap together and float over an underlayment without being fastened to the subfloor. Quick to install and easy to remove if needed.

Nail-down: Thicker engineered products (5/8" or 3/4") can be nail-down installed over plywood subfloors, just like solid hardwood.

Wear Layer Thickness Matters

The wear layer determines how many times the floor can be refinished. A 2mm veneer allows one light sand. A 4mm+ veneer can be refinished 1-2 times. We recommend products with at least a 3mm wear layer for long-term value.
