Service Overview
A buff and coat refreshes your existing finish without a full sand-down. Ideal for floors that are lightly worn but still in good structural shape - extends the life of your floors at a fraction of the cost.

The Process
A buff and coat lightly screens the existing finish and applies a fresh protective coat on top - no full sand-down required. It's the fastest, most affordable way to extend the life of your hardwood floors.
We inspect the floor to confirm the existing finish is in good enough condition for a recoat. If the finish is worn through to bare wood in any area, a full refinish may be needed instead.
We thoroughly clean the floor to remove dirt, oils, and residue that could interfere with adhesion of the new finish coat.
We use a buffer with a fine abrasive screen to lightly scuff the existing finish. This creates a microscopically rough surface that allows the new coat to bond.
We vacuum and tack-cloth the entire floor to remove all dust from the screening process, ensuring a clean surface for the finish coat.
We apply a fresh coat of polyurethane or hardwax oil over the entire floor, restoring a smooth, protected surface with renewed sheen.
A buff and coat is the smartest maintenance investment you can make for your hardwood floors. It refreshes the protective finish, eliminates light surface wear, and extends the time between full refinishes - all in about a day. Alpine Hardwood provides buff and coat services throughout Cokato, MN and the Twin Cities west metro.
A buff and coat (also called a screen and recoat) involves lightly abrading the existing finish with a fine screen, then applying a fresh coat of polyurethane or hardwax oil on top. It does not involve sanding to bare wood or changing the stain color - it simply renews the protective top layer.
A buff and coat won't fix deep scratches, pet stains, bare wood spots, or areas where the finish has completely worn away. If the finish has been compromised down to the wood, a full sand and refinish is needed. Not sure which your floors need? Schedule a floor assessment and we'll be upfront about which service is right.
A buff and coat typically costs 30-50% less than a full refinish and can be completed in a single day. The floor is ready for light foot traffic within hours and furniture within 24 hours.
We recommend a buff and coat every 3-5 years for residential floors with normal traffic. Regular maintenance can extend the time between full refinishes from 7-10 years to 15-20 years. Between recoats, professional floor polishing can help maintain shine.
